Earlier in the day, a report suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will ditch the iris scanner that debuted with the Galaxy Note7 in favor of an in-display fingerprint sensor. Apparently, the technology has matured enough to work well on its own. Now, new details have emerged about the in-display fingerprint scanner that would be used in the Galaxy S10.
Samsung Was Earlier Reported to Work on a Custom Biometrics Solution That Would Cover Half of Its Mobile Device’s Displays
Most companies use an optical in-display sensor in order to stop costs from ballooning, but Samsung will reportedly opt for an ultrasonic sensor. However, earlier reports that we covered suggested that the entry-level variant of the Galaxy S10 might stick to an optical sensor, while the remaining high-end models will ship with an ultrasonic reader.
Now the Twitter user Ice Universe, whose reports are usually spot on, has shed more light on the fingerprint scanner that we will be seeing on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus. The leakster confirmed that the phones will feature an ultrasonic sensor, and also revealed that they will be faster than the optical variety and also have a bigger recognition area. Although optical scanners have nothing on face recognition and regular fingerprint scanners when it comes to speed, they do offer a very high success rate.
Compared to optical fingerprint sensors, the S10 ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is faster and has a larger recognition area, and 30% of the screens may be recognized.

The tweet was followed by another cryptic tweet that says that Galaxy S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint reader and new screen technology will remain exclusive to Samsung for some time. While it is hard to make out what exactly this means, we are guessing the rumored pierced display is being hinted at.
It is entirely possible that the iris scanner is being phased out because it wouldn’t work with such a display like a selfie camera would do. Either way, the upcoming phone will presumably feature face-unlock too, so it makes sense to ditch the iris scanner.
