With the Snapdragon 855 announcement official, the chipset manufacturer’s partners will be progressing to make the 5G standard a global phenomenon with the launch of 5G-ready flagships next year. OnePlus is going to be one of those partners, but you should expect to pay a hefty sum for that ‘5G-ready’ label. According to the company’s CEO, a separate 5G-capable flagship will launch in 2019, but you could be paying at least $200 more than the OnePlus 6T’s base price to get one.

Customers Might End up Paying $300 More to Obtain That OnePlus 5G-Ready Flagship

In an interview with The Verge, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said that his company is working on both a new 5G flagship and an existing device that will be compatible with today’s networks. However, customers who want to future-proof themselves when 5G networks and its related equipment are rolled out in droves, they should expect to pay between $200-$300 more for it.

“It’s hard to know because there’s a lot of specifics still to look at, but it’s likely in the neighborhood of $200-300 more.”

The company’s best flagship, the OnePlus 6T retails for $549 in the U.S., so expect to pay at least $749 to experience 5G connectivity on your first OnePlus 5G-ready flagship. Pete also said that the company is pursuing to launch this 5G-ready smartphone because his customers demand it. It will also allow the engineers to take a good look at the technology and design a handset accordingly.

“5G will be particularly difficult to have a device that covers all of the world, or even most of the world’s networks.”

One challenge that the CEO stated was making a 5G phone for multiple cellular carriers that are operating on different frequencies. You should also know that for now, OnePlus’ upcoming 5G phone will be targeting just one type of 5G network, which is the slower sub-6 spectrum used by EE, but the advantage is this spectrum covers a wider area. This will happen thanks to an imminent partnership with European carriers, with OnePlus’ relationship with U.S.-based carriers expected to flourish in the coming months.

Pete Lau has not shared any specifications of the upcoming 5G-ready flagship but we’ll always be here to update you on the latest news, so stay tuned for more.
