Update: June 9, 2019 5:11 pm ET – You can now pre-register for Gears Pop now in the Google Play Store. You can also see a new trailer, shown above, that offers up some gameplay for this cartoony-like Gears of War game, mixed with the Funko Pop action figures.
Original story: June 11, 2018 – Microsoft made a lot of game announcements on Sunday at its E3 2018 press event in Los Angeles, but one of the most surprising ones was the reveal of the first mobile game in its hit Gears of War sci-fi shooter franchise. However, instead of a dark and gritty game, this title looks like it will be, well, cute.
Gears Pop!, due out sometime in 2019 for Android and iOS, will reimagine Gears characters like Marcus Fenix and others as walking, talking Funko Pop figures. Yes, the highly popular and collectible Funko Pop toy franchise is branching out into games. A non-gameplay teaser trailer suggests that Gears Pop! will not be targeting the hardcore gaming crowd.
No other details about Gears Pop! have been revealed yet, other than it will be developed by UK-based Mediatonic, who previously co-created another game based on a Microsoft property, Fable Fortune. Gears of War fans who are looking for a more hardcore experience have not been forgotten. Microsoft also announced Gears Tactics, a turn-based game for Windows PCs, and Gears 5, the next major game in the franchise, for Xbox One and Windows 10, in 2019.
